The British Council in collaboration with a Port Harcourt-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI) has concluded arrangements to train teachers in the early child educational programme in Rivers State. The programme is initiated by the wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi.
The training billed to commence this month is aimed at updating the skills of the teachers and equipping them with basic knowledge on nursery education.
A statement from the office of the First Lady indicates that the teachers training fashioned in line with British Montessori system would have the teachers undergo the University of Cambridge Knowledge Teachers Training (KTT) test.
The participating teachers would be drawn from the 23 council areas with more emphasis on the rural based local government areas of Rivers State.
An official of the British council, Patience Ezinwoke who confirmed the arrangement said the teachers training was in fulfillment of its social responsibility to complementing the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI) mass literacy programme for the less-privileged children at the rural communities.
Meanwhile, the management of ESI founded by the wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi has assured teachers in the ESI nursery school of adequate welfare package.
The end of academic session report shows that the salary of the teachers have been paid while effort would be intensified to provide adequate logistics arrangement and a good learning environment for both the students and teachers.
It would be recalled that Mrs Amaechi’s NGO, the ESI has initiated a mass rural literacy programmes for less-privileged children between ages 3-6 years to bridge the educational inequity and imbalance with their urban counterpart in the Port Harcourt metropolis.
