Police, Others Blamed For Textile Industry Collapse

The Nigerian poblic has accused the Nigerian Police Force and other governmental agencies of contributing to paralising the textile industry in the country.

This revelation was made at the stakeholders meeting organised by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Chief Achike Udenwa in Abuja, on the patronage of made in Nigeria goods.

One of the stakeholders at the meeting alleged that Nigerian Police was patronising a particular textile firm and still owed the firm about N70 million, which forced the firm to close down, when it could no longer pay staff and manage other expenses.

The participants, while noting that the Nigerian uniformed men clothes used to be made in the country, lamented that none of them now wear made in Nigeria clothes.

The Minister had organised the meeting in a bid to harmonise plans for the launch of the campaign to promote locally produced goods and services.

Udenwa, who at the meeting stated that government is intensifying efforts to ensure the stimulation of significant reduction in the importation of foreign goods, also lamented that Nigerians spend a lot of money patronising foreign goods.

He urged the Nigerian public to patronise locally made goods, which according to him, is as good as the imported products, adding that such locally made goods is made to fit our tropical region.

The Minister also explained that there are some adverse effect on the consumption of foreign products, for which some of them are made only to suit the temperate region, and not for the tropical area.
