Lagos Plants One Million Trees, This Year
Lagos State Government says it plans to plant 1000,000 trees this year to mark the second anniversary of the tree planting campaign in the state.
At least, one million and over 10 species of trees were expected to be planted this year alone in the state.
Speaking at a news conference to herald the tree planting campaign, commissioner for the Environment, Dr Muiz Banire, said some of the species to be planted are Pinus Carribea, Casuarina, Lagostromia, Yellow Phyens, Lypia, Neem, Terbebao, Delonix and Palon.
According to him, the plants were carefully selected to suit the soil texture, the underground facilities and other infrastructure around where they would be planted in order to ensure their survival and avoid damage to other facilities.
Banire said the tree planting campaign had been decentralised and that various government leaders and dignitaries would lead the campaign in different places.
He said that the state governor, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola would lead the tree planting campaign at Mobil Road and Ajegunle while the Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan would head the campaign at Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island.
The govenror’s wife, Mrs Abimbola Fashola will lead the campaign at Oworonsoki-Oshodi Road while the speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemie Ikuforiji will lead the campaign at Oba Ogunji Road, Agege.
The commissioner called on the media to partner with the state government in creating awareness about the tree planting campaign.
Governor Fashola on Tuesday, 14 July 2009 marked the tree second anniversary of the campaign in lagos with tree planting.
