Imo Conducts LG Polls Soon

Elections into the 27 Local Government Councils in Imo State would soon take place.
This follows the report of the Local Government Electoral Law Reform Panel, headed by Chief Bon Nwakanma, SAN, which was submitted to government recently.
In a white paper released by government on the issue, the election would be for councilors who would then constitute an electoral college whereby a chairman would be elected.
According to the white paper, councilors would be elected to hold office for a period of two years after which they may be re-elected, same for the chairman.
It would be recalled that since the inception of the Ohakim government in the state, election into local government councils have never been held.
Instead, the governor appointed transition committees to oversee the affairs of the third tier of government.
However, the white paper rejected the recommendation by Nwakanma panel for the independence of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC).
The state government used the medium to reiterate its stand on the fight against “godfatherism” in politics, while calling for law enforcement agents to fish-out trouble makers at elections, stressing the need for non-partisanship of security men at the pools.
