Groups Condemn Police Officer’s Attack On Colleague

Some human rights groups in the country have criticized the physical attack on a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, Ewi Samuel Inuejalowo by a senior police officer, only a step ahead of the victim.

The assault was said to have resulted in damage to the ear drum of the DSP.

The coalition Against Corruption, CACOL, Committee for the Defend of Human Rights, CDHR, and the campaign for Democracy, CD, in a joint statement, weekend, said the slapping and molestation of DSP Ewi was an act of irresponsibility and indiscipline which the police high command should avoid.

The statements were signed by Debo Adeniran for CACOL, Segun Ikueson, CDHR and CDs Popoola Ajayi.

DSP Ewi had early last month written a petition to the police headquarters in Abuja alleging that SP Dayo Akinbiseyin slapped him in the office at Kam Salem building where both work as detectives.  In the petition, he alleged that over a small dispute on bail for some suspects, Akinbiseyin pounced on him and physically assaulted him.

The right groups noted that since the petition was sent to the police headquarters, nothing concrete has been done on the matter, adding that the SP has since not shown any remorse over the attack.

“We urge the Inspector-General of Police to investigate this matter and bring the culprits to book.  It is the greatest form of misconduct for a senior police officer to slap and wound his colleague right in the office of the police.  Such a police officer has dented the image of the force and should appropriately face sanction if the police is interested in protecting its already smeared image,” the joint statement by the groups pointed out.
