Flooding: Delta Governor Orders Demolition Of Illegal Structures
Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has ordered the immediate demolition of all illegal structures blocking drains in Asaba as temporal measures to solving the flood problem in the town.
He directed the Commissioner for Works to start putting drainage in some parts of the town to aid water flow pending the award of contract for the massive drainage work of the state capital in the dry season.
Dr. Uduaghan who gave the order while inspecting major streets in Asaba after a heavy down pour condemned individuals who built structures blocking drainages in the town.
He also directed that all illegal fences not approved by the Ministry of Lands and Survey be removed forthwith.
Speaking further “This illegal structures are blocking the drainage system, they have to be removed and the drainage channelled to a major source for easy flow of water to avoid flooding in the town.”
The governor continued “I want us to get to the stage where Asaba will be the cleanest town in the country. It is possible, we can do it. All we need is for the government to play its part, that is what we are doing, the people have to do their own for a better state.”
He expressed dis-satisfaction over the filthy nature of the State Secretariat building, which was over taken by weeds and directed Mr. George Orogun to ensure that the complex was kept clean.
The places inspected by the governor include the Event Center for festivals along core area of the state, Jesus Saves Road, Umuezei quarters in Eze Ugboma Road, Abraka end of Nnebisi Road and Agric Road.
The Commissioner accompanied Dr. Uduaghan on the inspection for Finance, Mr. George Orogun, Works, Surveyor Paul Osaji, Environment, Mr. Lawrence Osiegbu, Health Dr. Joseph Otumare and the Chairman of Waste Management Board, Mr. Frank Omare.
