FG Approves N46.7bn For Lagos Schools

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), Monday, approved the sum of N46.7bn for the Lagos-Eko Secondary School Project and the control of HIV/AIDS.

The Minster of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, who briefed newsmen after the FEC meeting said N15.8bn was for the Lagos-Eko Secondary School Project while N30.7bn was for the control of HIV/AIDS.

She said the school project aimed at supporting junior and senior secondary schools will benefit more than 500,000 public school pupils in the state.

According to the minister, the project will also facilitate quarters buildings for more than 7000 teachers and school administrations as well as boost their teaching capacity.

She also disclosed that the money was sourced as credit from the International Development Association (IDA).

“In view of government commitment to revive the educational sector in order to improve schools and enhance standards and following a memo from the minister of finance council (Thursday) considered and approved a request from the IDA credit scheme for the sum of approximately $95m for the proposed Lagos-Eko Secondary Education project”, she declared.

She also said that the objective of the proposed projects are to improve the quantity of education in public junior and senior secondary schools across Lagos State, strengthen the public secondary schools and boost monitoring and evaluation capacity of the ministry of education.

Akunyili said the FEC also considered and approved the final payment of N6.19bn in favour of the construction firm, Reynolds Construction Company, RCC for the construction of the federal ministry of finance building Contract for the building was awarded in 2001 while 95 per cent of the project had been achieved. The ministry had already taken possession of the project.
