Female Parliamentarians Told To Advance Women Interest
Wife of the Rivers State governor Dame Judith Amaechi has charged female members of the Commonwealth Parliament Association (CPA) to use their privilege position to advance the cause of womanhood.
Dame Judith Amaechi stated this at a dinner in Government House in honour of Female Delegates to the 40th CPA Conference in Port Harcourt.
Mrs Amaechi represented by the wife of the Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Mrs Sotonye Harry stated that the empowerment of women would accelerate development of a nation and its people.
According to her, “it is very imperative that women in governance use their privileged position to advance the cause of the women and less privileged in our society.”
The Governor’s wife advised women to unite in their own interest and champion a cause to alleviating poverty among women as well as initiate legislation that would promote and protect the interest of women.
In her speech, a representative of the Commonwealth Parliament Assocation and Chairperson of Female Parliamentarians, Prof. Sheila Tlou commended the Governor’s wife for initiating through the empowerment support initiative, a maternal health programme that would address challenges facing mothers and women in Rivers State.
Prof. Tlou stated that the actualisation of the Millennium Development Goals is dependent on the empowerment capacity of a country driven by the women.
She commended Mrs Amaechi for initiating laudable programmes aimed at eradicating poverty among women. According to her “we must commend Mrs Amaechi the First Lady of Rivers State for the wonderful programme she has. She is driving the women through good maternal health programme toward actualising the MDGs.
We must support her and her NGO for a wonderful job in the interest of women.
Also speaking the Commissioner for Women Affairs attested that Dame Judith Amaechi has initiated laudable empowerment programmes for Rivers women.
The evening was indeed filled with thrill and fun as delegate and guests hit the dance floor to popular musical tracks.
