Commissioner Hails Traffic Management Bill

The Rivers State Traffic Management Bill before the State House of Assembly has been described as a positive step by the executive arm of government to provide permanent solutions to traffic problems in the State.

Speaking to newsmen in his office on the importance of the Bill, the State Transport Commissioner, Mr. George Tolofari explained that the bill when enacted into law would empower the present administration to establish a full fledged Traffic Management Agency for the permanent management of all traffic related matters in the state.

Mr. Tolofari who said that it was a proactive initiative that would outlive all previous adhoc traffic arrangements and outfits in state, noted that the Rivers State Traffic Management Agency would create legitimate jobs for the people of the state.

According to him, those who shall be recruited to work in the Agency would become civil servants, who could be easily disciplined when they are caught doing the wrong thing in the course of their duty or rewarded for hard work and dedication to duty in line with the rules of the service.

The State Transport boss who expressed appreciation to the State House of Assembly for their commitment to finding a lasting solution to the traffic problems by giving the Bill a speedy hearing, said that the cooperation existing between the House and the executive arm of government was necessary for the state to move forward.

According to the Commissioner, the Rivers State Traffic Management Agency when fully set up would greatly compliment the role of the Traffic Police and other traffic related government agencies to reduce loss of man hours on our roads and make the movement of people and goods as well as services the delight and pleasure it is expected to be.

Mr. Tolofari also appealed to transport union leaders and other corporate citizens involved in one form of transport business or the other in the State to enlighten their members and workers on the need to always obey traffic lows nd facilities as well as avoid the temptation to park at unauthorised places in parts of Port Harcourt and environs to enhance the traffic situation in the state capital.
