As of the 2019 general election draws near, two major political parties in Enugu State, South- East Nigeria, the ruling Peoples Democratic party PDP, and opposition All Progressives Congress APC yesterday signed a peace accord with the state police command .
The chairmen of the two political parties, Dr. Ben Nwoye of the APC and Augustine Nnamani of the PDP, signed the document during a meeting between the police, candidates of their parties and other major stakeholders in the state.
In his speech during the event which took place at the Senior police officers mess in Enugu, Convener of the meeting and Enugu state Commissioner of police, Mr. Muhammed Danmalam, had charged candidates of all political parties participating in the forthcoming general elections to avoid bitterness and rancour, stressing that they should not see politics as a do-or-die affair.
DanMallam however warned that any person caught causing disorderliness and trouble before, during and after the elections would be dealt with according to the law, saying the Command would not tolerate political thuggery during the polls.
The Enugu Police boss noted that Enugu has been a peaceful and politically mature state, stressing that the Political parties should caution their supporters against violence as the police would not hesitate to arrest anyone found instigating violenc
According to him, “This meeting is to remind the political parties and their supporters to ensure peace and free election in 2019 because the international communities are watching us.”
