NIMASA Partners Airforce On Maritime Safety


As part of efforts in giv
ing expression to its statutory mandates in relation to maritime  security, safety, search and rescue, the apex maritime regulator,  Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has opted for collaboration with relevant agencies of government in order to have a seamless execution of its mandates.
The apex maritme regulator entered into partnership with the Nigerian Airforce  on the 26th of August 2013 with a view to further enhance the agencies capacity in enforcing extant maritime laws as well as to monitor and secure the Nigeria  territorial waters, and Exclusion  Economical j Zone (EEZ), and to check rising  incidences of sophistications of pirates, armed robbery at sea and unlawful activities in Nigeria waters.
The memorandum of understanding, according to the Director General of the Maritime Apex agency, Mr. Patrick Zakiede AkpoboloKemi, would    strengthened the role of the Nigeria Airforce in defending the territorial integrity of. Nigeria’ by air, and their establishment of a reputable and efficient Maritime capacity in the gulf of Guinea through their ATR 42 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) and other platforms.
The  NIMASA boss further explained that the operations include search and rescue operation as well as the conduct of air surveillance and other operations for the enhancement of safety and security in Nigeria Maritime environment.
According to him, :since the inception of the partnership, we have recorded tremendous success in the area of air and Coastal surveillance and the exercise of the right hot pursuit.
