Dickson Assures On Science Studies In Schools
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State says the State Government would create the necessary environment for the promotion of science and technology studies in the state.
Dickson made this known in Yenagoa when he received the report of the operational modalities and administrative structures of the new Ministry of Science, Technology and Manpower Development.
The report was written by an 18-member committee set up by the government to articulate a blueprint for the development of science and technology in the state.
Represented by Chief John Jonah, the Deputy Governor, Dickson said that government would encourage the formation of science societies in secondary schools to popularise science subjects.
He said, “an environment devoid of scientific and technological activities will not attract industrial projects and programmes.’’
Seriake thanked members of the committee for a job well-done and assured them that government would study their recommendations.
Earlier, the Committee’s Chairperson, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack had said the committee fashioned out a clear mission and vision for the development of science and technology in the state.
Walson-Jack, who is the Commissioner for Science, Technology and Manpower Development, said the committee recommended the promotion and demystification of science and technology through popular education and programmes.
On the administrative structure of the ministry, the chairman said, they recommended the creation of seven departments, five units and three agencies.
The committee was inaugurated a fortnight ago to articulate a blueprint for the development of science and technology in Bayelsa State.
